The Spanish Prime Minister, Jose María Aznar, came to Brazil to talk about business and had the chance to listen to an open-hearted Lula.
Spain is the second biggest investor in Brazil. It was one of the countries that took most advantage of the wave of privatizations of the state-owned companies. In the past seven years, $9 billion came from Spain to the bank sector. Another $10 billion were invested in telecommunications, and $2 billion in the electric sector. Aznar presented a proposal to boost the relationship between Spain and Brazil, and, for the first time, he manifested his support publicly for an old Brazilian desire.
"We are very aware of the meaning of Brazil's aspirations regarding the United Nation's Security Council. We know it very well and understand its logic perfectly, and we declare a live empathy for what these logical Brazilian aspirations mean insofar as the Security Council is concerned," said Aznar.
This Wednesday night, President Lula and the Spanish Prime Minister met during the Mercosur-European Union Business Forum. The president said that an approximation between the two blocks is strategic, and that the European position in agricultural subsidies will have great weight in world negotiations.
The president also talked about the FTAA, the Free Trade Area of the Americas. To him, no agreement will be welcome if one of the parts feels hindered.
"They say Brazil does not want to negotiate the FTAA, quite the contrary, Brazil wants to negotiate and it will stay awake 24 hours a day to do so. What we don't want is to be the losers in the FTAA. If we get a draw, that will be great," said President Lula.
The President revealed to be trustful. "The only impossible thing is God sinning. We can transform all the rest if we believe in us," he said.
The President also said that being a rightist and a leftist does not matter while defending national interests. "You can have any ideology you want, but when it comes time to govern, bread is bread, cheese is cheese, as we say in Brazil. You can't always do what you want to do. You do what is important to do," concluded Lula.
